City of Butler Firefighter James W. Miller, second from left, president of Local 1749 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, was awarded the Butler union's charter March 18, 1968, from Raymond Fogerty, union representative. Also pictured is recording secretary James Maletta, left, and treasurer Paul Zarnick. The charter ceremony took place in the former Central Fire Station, located next to the City Building at 140 W. North St. The city also had fire stations on Monroe and East Brady streets. The Central Station was torn down in 1993 because of structural problems. The fire department, the only paid department in Butler County, was consolidated in the current Public Safety Building at the corner of North Washington and West New Castle streets. The department is still a union member with Firefighter Jim Kaufman serving as president.
