Worsley's
Worsley's at 161 N. Main St. in Butler opened 81 years ago on March 17, 1927. Albert E. Worsley Sr. leased a wallpaper department in the former Troutman building. Wallpaper sold from 2 cents to $1.25.
The business remained there until 1945, when it moved to Cunningham Street. It employed three people.
The business was moved again in 1963 to its present location at the corner of Main and North streets.
Albert E. Worsley Jr. took over the business with help from his wife, Lorraine, and his mother, Anna Worsley. Family members added to the work force to help as business grew. Paint became part of the inventory, soon followed by unfinished and outdoor furniture.
Lorraine Worsley became interested in dolls and thought they would be a wise investment. Dolls and dollhouses were added, and in 1975 Worsley's bought the building vacated when Butler Office Products moved to accommodate the growing inventory.
From 1975 until 1985, Worsley's opened its second store "The Wall Paper Center" in the Greater Butler Shopping Mart. Family friends joined force to help run the new store. Their oldest daughter, Keri, began her career in the business in 1977.
In 1984, Worsley's bought the former Furniture Galleries Warehouse building at 113 E. Wayne St.
In 1990, youngest daughter, Cheryl, joined her mother, Loraine, to help manage the office. In July 1996, Shearer hardware closed and that building was bought and used for expansion.
The Worsley family would like to acknowledge their dependable staff of loyal employees and would like to thank all of their wonderful customers who have supported us for the last 81 years.
