The Rock off to best start since 1980
The Slippery Rock University women's softball team improved to 12-2 with an 8-5, 9-2 sweep at Bowie State (Md.)Friday.
Winning pitcher Lisa Getgen had two hits in the first game while Nikki Collins collected two RBI for The Rock. Getgen struck out four and allowed three earned runs in six innings.
Jessica Ellebruch had three hits and two RBIin the second game. Winning pitcher Stacey Rhoades, Whitney Warmus and Jordan Zeunges each had two hits and one RBI.
Rhoades struck out five and allowed two earned runs in five innings.
SRU, off to its best start since 1980, plays at Gannon Tuesday. The home opener is at 2:30 p.m. Friday against Indiana (Pa.).
SRU split a twinbill against Division I Howard University Thursday, winning the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap 8-0.
Jessica Kortz scored both runs for The Rock on a solo home run in the top of the third inning and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth that broke a 1-all tie.
Kortz also had SRU's lone hit in Game 2, a single in the fourth inning.
Alison Rusnak and Jayme Timmons scored a goal each as the Rock dropped a 23-2 decision to Bloomsburg.SRU(0-5), which was outshot 44-5, hosts Shippensburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
