PLUM — A state lawmaker wants the state Public Utility Commission to investigate a fatal house explosion.
Sen. Sean Logan wants the agency to see if gas company Dominion Peoples has adequate staff and training to inspect its lines and if the utility spends enough on capital improvements.
A National Transportation and Safety Board investigator says the Plum house exploded Wednesday when gas from a broken two-inch line seeped into the building.
The explosion killed 64-year-old Richard Leith of Trafford and injured his 4-year-old granddaughter, Gianna Pettinato.
Dominion spokesman Elmore Lockley says the company looks forward to sharing information about its maintenance and safety programs with investigators.
ROCHESTER — Police say a Beaver County man led them on a six-hour-long high-speed chase.Thirty-year-old Mark Baumbach is in Beaver County Jail after Wednesday's chase.The pursuit ended after Baumbach's pickup truck got stuck in mud at a mule farm. Police say Baumbach fled on foot and called 911 to report his vehicle stolen. Police caught up with him shortly after.At one point, Baumbach's erratic driving forced restaurant diners to run for cover. Police say he also played chicken with oncoming vehicles, including two tractor-trailers and a gasoline tanker.Police say this is the second time in the past month Baumbach has led them on a chase. They believe Baumbach gets an adrenaline rush from the pursuit. He was driving with a suspended license.
PHILADELPHIA — State Sen. Vincent Fumo is scheduled to be released from a hospital on Sunday, a week after the Philadelphia Democrat had a heart attack.The 64-year-old Fumo is one of the most powerful lawmakers in Harrisburg. He is currently awaiting trial on federal corruption charges. Three Democrats have filed to run against him in the April primary. If Fumo wins, he will still have to beat a Republican in November.
WASHINGTON — A Washington County hairstylist shot an unhappy client after she complained about her haircut, police said.Monique Reed, 38, of Washington, was arrested Thursday and charged with shooting Lauren Newton in the small of her back, near the buttocks.Newton, 28, was getting a haircut at Reed's house when an argument erupted about the style, said police Chief James Blyth."She (Reed) went to the bedroom, got a gun, fired a shot in the ceiling," Blyth said. Reed then shot Newton, who was trying to flee with her sister, Blyth said.Newton was being treated in a Pittsburgh hospital and her injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.Reed was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. She was arraigned late Thursday and sent to the county jail.
ERIE — An Erie man is in jail on charges he threatened employees at WJET-TV.State police say they arrested 46-year-old Michael Domedion at a bus stop on Friday after getting a tip on his whereabouts. Police had been searching for him since mid-February.Police say he made threatening phone calls to the ABC News affiliate because they wouldn't run a story saying he was mistreated by city police.He's is accused of threatening to start a holocaust and saying he was good with a rifle.Domedion is charged with terroristic threats and harassment by communication.
PITTSBURGH — The Three Rivers Arts Festival is splitting off from the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh ahead of this summer's event.The festival and the Carnegie announced the separation jointly. They say that the festival has been largely independent for 20 years, especially in areas of artistic programming and fundraising.Carnegie assisted with human resources and accounting. Festival executive director Elizabeth Reiss says festival employees fell under the museums' umbrella, so a new benefits package will have to be built. However, not much will change because the costs had always been covered by festival fundraising.The 49-year-old event has an annual budget of $1.6 million, with $1.1 million going to the festival.
