SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. — The Slippery Rock University baseball team outslugged Shepherd University 13-12 and 8-1 in a season-opening doubleheader Monday in a battle of NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional powers.

Billy Herman, a Grove City High graduate, went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in the first contest, which gave coach Jeff Messer his 700th win.

Matt Adams had three hits and three RBI and Slippery Rock High graduate Matt Messer and Rich Michalek each added a solo home run.

In the nightcap, M.J. Parsons went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Jim Eimiller had two hits and two RBI and freshman Derek Diruscia had a pinch-hit homer to account for the other SRU runs.

SLIPPERY ROCK— The Slippery Rock High swim team ended its season at the District 10 meet at Penn State Behrend over the weekend, setting some school records at the competition.The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Sophia Tsiris, Alyssa Martinez, Nicole Moraitis and Katie Kosiorek swam a school-record time of 1 minute, 57.19 seconds.On the boys side, Caleb Sykora-Bodie, Nathan Eilenfeldt, Andrew Opalewski and Jacob Johnston broke the school's 200 freestyle record with a time of 1:38.72. Johnston swam the 100 freestyle in a school-record time of 52.26 seconds. Kyle Hawk reduced his record time in the 100 backstroke to 1:04.11 and Opalewski trimmed his record time in the 50 freestyle to 23.46 seconds.Hawk, Eilenfeldt, Opalewski and Johnston reduced their 200 medley relay record to 1:51.99.
