The best kind of Cabin Fever Sunday show spotlights trout
WARRENDALE — Those attending the largest trout fishing show in Western Pennsylvania this Sunday at the Four Points Sheraton Pittsburgh North can learn everything from how use a spey rod to fish for Great Lakes steelhead to fishing one of the state's famed limestone waterways for wild trout.
The Penn's Woods West Chapter of Trout Unlimited, in conjunction with Family Tyes, will host the 13th annual Cabin Fever trout fishing show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the hotel.
The more than 50 exhibitors include dealers offering fly and spin fishing tackle and gear, rod building materials, trout flies and fly tying supplies, outdoor art, guide services and accommodations.
"Cabin Fever is the place to start the upcoming trout season, and it's fun for the whole family," said Walter Reineman, president of the Penn's Woods Chapter.
The free seminars begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday
One of talks, "Spey Fishing the Great Lakes Region," is offered by Will Turek, who will discuss the history, uses and techniques for fishing with long, two-handed spey rods.
Rod Rohrbach of the Little Lehigh Fly Shop will give a presentation on "Fishing the Little Lehigh."
Tom Brtalik of Tom's Fly Fishing Service will conduct a fly casting demonstration.
Rohrbach also will give a seminar titled "Fishing the Cushion," an explanation of stream organisms and how they apply to fly selection and tactics when fishing for bottom-feeding trout.
Family Tyes, a non-profit organization that promotes family relationships and youth development through fly fishing, will host free, hands-on introductory fly tying classes and a fly casting contest for children ages 7 to 18.
There also will be used fishing tackle for sale.
Cabin Fever is Penn's Woods West Chapter's major fundraising event to help finance its Pine Creek project.
The chapter works to protect and improve trout waterways and is engaged in a long-term project to make Pine Creek a blue ribbon trout fishery.
The chapter also offers an annual bus trip to Fisherman's Paradise on Spring Creek in Bellefonte, Pa., conducts fly tying classes, participates in sports shows, underwrites sending high school students to conservation and fly fishing schools and publishes a monthly Hatches & Rises newsletter.
Admission to the event is $7. Children under 12 are free.
