SLIPPERY ROCK — Nineteen Slippery Rock High swimmers will compete at the District 10 Class AAChampionships Friday and Saturday at Penn State-Behrend in Erie.

The Rockets qualified eight individuals for one or more events:Andrew Opalewski in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Jacob Johnston in the 200 individual medleyand 100 freestyle, Nathan Eilenfeldt in the 200 IMand 100 breaststroke, Caleb Sykora-Bodie in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Kyle Hawk in the 200 IMand 100 backstroke, Ken Tibbens in the 100 backstroke, Sophia Tsiris in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke and Katie Kosiorek in the 100 backstroke.

Opalewski has the school record time of 23.77 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Hawk has the school record of 1:04.34 in the 100 backstroke.

Joining these eight in district relay competition for Slippery Rock are Kristen Workley, Alyssa Martinez, Whitney Snyder, Hannah Parsons, Katelyn Brozenic, Nicole Moraitis, Chloe Pizor, Kristen Thompson, Sarah Dublin, Ryan Hemshrodt and Jesse Laughner.

The Slippery Rock girls 200 freestyle relay team owns the school record in that event.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers University's C. Vivian Stringer became only the third women's basketball coach to record 800 victories after a 60-46 victory over DePaul Wednesday.Stringer, a graduate of Slippery Rock University, joined Tennessee's Pat Summitt and Texas' Jody Conradt in the elite club.The No. 4 ranked Scarlet Knights improved to 23-4 overall and 13-1 in the Big East. Stringer began her career in 1973 at Cheyney (Pa.) State and also coached at Iowa.

KITTANNING — The Knoch hockey team shut out Conemaugh Valley 6-0 in a PIHLClass A matchup Wednesday at the Belmont Complex.No details were available.

WASHINGTON — Roger Clemens failed to convince Congress he was telling the truth.So the leaders of a House committee want the Justice Department to investigate if the star pitcher lied under oath about using performance-enhancing drugs.In a letter sent Wednesday to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Henry Waxman and ranking Republican Tom Davis said Clemens' testimony that he "never used anabolic steroids or human growth hormone warrants further investigation."
