The two young men were among a group of about 50 high school seniors interested in enlisting in the Army. On March 18, the young men in the group went to Pittsburgh on a government-paid weekend retreat where they took qualification and aptitude tests, had physicals and learned more about opportunities in the military. Those who decided to enlist could be sworn in during the weekend on a 120-day delay program, which allowed them to choose their assignment and finish their education before beginning training in June or July. Sgt. Joseph Songer was the Butler recruiting officer.
