Levy lifts SRU to win
Freshman guard Itay Levy hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining to give the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team a 74-72 win over Shippensburg University at Morrow Field House Saturday afternoon.
Levy's 3-pointer put SRU up 73-72. Matt Schaefer hit a free throw with one second left to secure the win for The Rock (4-15, 2-3).
SRU trailed by seven points with three minutes remaining, but scored the game's final nine points.
The win moved The Rock into a tie withClarion for fourth place in the PSAC-West.
The two teams battle Wednesday.
Erroll Robinson led SRU with 17 points. Cory Summerville added 15 for The Rock.
Women's basketball
Haley Gaidosh scored 15 points, but the SlipperyRock University women's basketball team fell to Shippensburg 74-58 Saturday afternoon.
The Rock was outscored 38-24 in the final 13 minutes.
Shippensburg sophomore Lauren Beckley scored 23 points and became the first PSAC women's basketball player to eclipse 1,000 career points in her first two seasons.
Freeport Highgraduate LaceyCochran was one of four SlipperyRock University track athletes to break a school record at the Akron Open Saturday.Cochran set a record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.89 seconds.Jennifer Hanson broke her own school mark in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 5.75 inches.Jeren DeBardelan set a men's school record in the 6-meter dash with a time of 6.88 and Pat Reagan broke the 5,000-meter run mark with a time of 14 minutes, 37.76 seconds.Cochran, DeBardelan and Reagan qualified for the NCAA Division II national championship meet with their times.Hansen had already qualified for nationals.
