Assault rifle found near fatal shooting
PITTSBURGH — Police found an AK-47 assault rifle in weeds near a home where gunfire killed a 12-year-old girl and wounded her mother, officials said.
Police also recovered a 9 mm handgun in a parking lot near the home on the city's North Side where the shooting erupted Monday night, Pittsburgh police Chief Nate Harper said Tuesday.
Both weapons were being checked for ballistics and fingerprints. The girl and her 42-year-old mother were visiting the girl's 22-year-old sister when the shooting happened.
At least 40 shell casings were found outside the house, he said. The same house had been shot at on Jan. 17, and police believe the two shootings are connected.
