POLAR PLUNGE — Butler's chapter of the Polar Bear Club was activated at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 1, 1952, when these four Butler High School girls took a dip in the water of the C. Chal Miller Dam in Center Township near Route 8, about five miles north of Butler. Even though the high temperature for the day reached 66 degrees, a record high, the water was still icy cold, awarding goose bumps to, from left, Joan Huey, Joyce Campbell, Sue Greenawalt and Ada Dilts.
