Adult bowlers team up with youth
BUTLER TWP— For one day, Butler County's bowling present will meet its future.
The fourth annual Bowl With Butler's Best Tournament takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday at Family Bowlaway.
The event brings together 20 of the county's top adult bowlers and numerous YSBC Youth Association bowlers as teammates.
"We invite the top bowlers in the area to take part in this and they love it,"tournament manager Bill Fay said. "They enjoy interacting with the kids."
Scholarship money is presented to young bowlers on winning teams. Scores of the youngsters and their adult teammates are combined.
The event debuted in 2005 with $910 in scholarship money divided among 15 youths. In 2006, $1,100 in scholarships was divided among 16.
Last year, the scholarship money totaled $1,620 and was divided among 25 winners.
"We had about 95 kids in this tournament last year at Sherwood Lanes," said YSBCYouth Association president Rick Reeder. "We have around 80 signed up already this year."
Entry fee is $12.50 per bowler and includes pizza and drinks during the event. Applications are available in bowling houses throughout the county.
During last year's event, Kevin Richardson rolled a perfect game and an 800 series. Jeff Suchonic bowled a 300 game as well.
Both are among the 20 adult bowlers in this year's field.
"The kids got to witness those performances last year,"Reeder said. "They learn a lot from these guys."
Fay said his organization puts together a Pittsburgh Steelers basket to raffle off each year as part of the fundraising efforts for scholarship money.
"The bowling community looks forward to this event and it builds enthusiasm for the sport,"Fay said. "Kids get to see the best bowlers in the area and they want to be like them."
The youth bowlers, ranging from age 7 to 20, are divided into four age divisions.
Last year's event at Sherwood Lanes was split into two squad times. At 40-lane Family Bowlaway, the lone squad time is 11 a.m.
"Bowlers with varying degrees of ability participate,"Reeder said. "It's open to any of our Youth Association bowlers."
There are about 500 Youth Association bowlers in Butler County.
