Prizant's orders will be covered

HARRISBURG — Customers who paid for carpet orders at Prizant's Floors will get their orders filled or deposits refunded, according to the state attorney general.

Prizant's, which had stores in Butler and Cranberry townships among others in the Pittsburgh region, closed suddenly in December.

The office of Attorney General Tom Corbett announced Friday it had reached a $100,000 settlement to address complaints from consumers. The Assurance of Voluntary Compliance was filed Friday in Allegheny County Court and sets aside the money for customers who lost money when the businesses closed.

As part of the agreement, Prizant's will make arrangements to fulfill customer's orders, if possible, or to refund deposits for orders that cannot be completed. Refund amounts will be determined by the total number of consumers who file claims, according to Corbett's office.

The agreement also calls for an additional $20,000 in civil penalties if Prizant's officials do not comply with the terms of the settlement, according to the attorney general's news release.

Customers who received credit for a Prizant's deposit from another carpet or flooring business, or who have already been able to stop payment on an order, will be limited to claiming the amount of the Prizant's deposit minus any credit or previous refund.

The attorney general has received about 80 complaints. These customers don't need to file a new complaint. Customer claims must be made in the next 30 days.

Claims can be filed by calling the attorney general's consumer protection hotline at 800-441-2555 or submitting an online complaint using the attorney general's Web site, www.attorneygeneral.gov.
