Rachel E. Vargo
Rachel E. Vargo, 86, of Oneida Valley Road died early Thursday morning at the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born in Wil-lock, Alle-gheny County, Dec. 2, 1921, she was a daughter of John and Mary Grow Smith.
She was a homemaker and had been a waitress at the Garden Gate Restaurant in the 1950s. She also was a seamstress and had worked from her home and at the Spaide Shirt Factory. She later had been a sales associate at the Murphy Mart and then at Ames Department Store, that took it over.
She was a longtime member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church. She also belonged to the Tanglewood Senior Center, where she enjoyed line dancing and was a former member the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are a son, Richard M. Vargo and his wife, Susan, of Chicora; a daughter, Mary B. Heist of Butler; a brother, Abraham L. Smith of West Sunbury; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Michael Vargo, whom she married Oct. 12, 1939, died March 29, 1982. She also was preceded in death by a son, Michael John Vargo, who died in April 1971; three brothers; and four sisters.
<B>VARGO </B>— Friends of Rachel E. Vargo, who died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N.
