Ace

Longtime Kenai, Alaska, resident, John Robert Ace Sr., 88, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at the Providence Wesley Care Center in Seward, Alaska.

Mr. Ace was born Feb. 28, 1919, to Hays and Katherine Lowers Ace in Petrolia.

He entered the Army at Fort Lee, Va., served during World War II and was honorably discharged Jan. 7, 1946.

Mr. Ace worked for the coal mines of Pennsylvania, Armco Steel Mill Construction, the Castle Rubber Co. and was a service mechanic, all near his hometown of Chicora.

He moved to Kenai in July 1983. Mr. Ace attended the Mt. Redoubt Baptist Church and the Kenai Church of God.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and story-telling.

"John 'Pop Pop' will be remembered for his friendly mild nature toward one and all. His sacrificing of his time for his family always came first. He had a special love for trout fishing and silver salmon fishing on the Kenai lakes and streams. He would always be seen with 'Tiny' at the favorite spot at Cunningham Park on the Kenai River in the early fall. His love and generosity will be missed by one and all. He was a proud veteran of WWII," wrote the family.

Mr. Ace was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Margaret "Tiny" Ace; his parents, Hays and Katherine Ace; brothers, Roy, Albert, Richard and Clydee; sisters, Myrtle, Gertrude, Bertha, Mable, Marie, Gladys and Dorothy.

He is survived by his son, John Ace Jr. of Palmer, Alaska; daughter, Kitty Thompson of Kenai; grandsons, Mathew Ace of Valdez, Alaska, Andrew Ace of Big Lake, Alaska, Aaron and Bryce Thompson, both of Anchorage, Alaska, and Brad Thompson of Kenai; granddaughters, Jené Hodges of Palmer, Angie Marden of Palmer, Robin Newland of Wasilla, Alaska, Sue Aquipel of San Mateo, Calif., Connie Zanazzo of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Viorica Thompson of Kenai; brothers, Lenord Ace of Chicora and Charles Ace of Bruin; a sister, Jean Scott of Petrolia; 27 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

<B>ACE </B>— Funeral services for John Robert "Pop Pop" Ace Sr., who died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, were Tuesday at the <B>Peninsula Memorial Chapel</B>, Kenai, with the Rev. Roy Moore officiating.
