Arena beer prices boosted by tax

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County's new 10-percent drink tax is leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of patrons at Mellon Arena, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Concession vendor Aramark says it chose to round up the price of beers after adding the 10-percent tax.

That's why a 12-ounce bottle of beer now costs $6, up 14 percent from the old price of $5.25. A 16-ounce can now costs $7, up 12 percent from $6.25. And a 21-ounce draft beer now costs $7.50, up from $6.75.

Aramark says rounding off the prices makes it easier for fans who don't have to dicker with small change and can get back to their seats faster.
