Hess

J. Frank Hess, 93, a former board member and one of the foun-ders of the Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Township, died Monday afternoon at the retirement community. He formerly lived in Ingomar.

Born in Uniontown, Jan. 18, 1914, he was the son of Frank B. and Anna Florence Baird Hess.

After working his way through Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University, he graduated in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

He retired as president of Elwin G. Smith, a division of the Cyclops Corp., where he was a director. He also was on the board of Duquesne Slag.

Mr. Hess was an active member of the Ingomar United Methodist Church, where he served on the board and the United Methodist Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. He was a long time member of the North Boroughs Rotary Club and past treasurer of the Metropolitan YMCA of Pittsburgh, where he was instrumental in the building of the Deer Valley YMCA Family Camps. He was a past chairman of the board of North Hills Passavant Hospital, 1968-1993, and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1986. He also was a member of the Franklin Park Authority and had served as an officer of many other organizations and boards.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Betty Kelley Hess, who he married July 1, 1938; a son, William B. Hess and his wife, Lynn, of Orchard Park, and two daughters, Patricia K. Bothe of Concord, Mass., and Katherine Hess Little and her husband, Dana, of Auburn, Maine. He was the grandfather of Sarah Elizabeth Bothe of San Francisco, Calif., Susannah Kelley Bothe and her husband, Robert Rogers, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Catherine Ann Bothe and her husband, Eamon Brown, of Providence, R.I., Katherine Lynn Hess of Williamsville, N.Y., David Frank Little and his wife, Laura, of Evanston, Ill., Christine Hess Little of Boston, Mass., Robert W. Little of Auburn, Maine, and Susan E. White and her husband, Ryan, of Lakewood, N.Y.; and great-grandfather of Jack Squire White and Ella Katherine White, both of Lakewood.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Hess, who died in 1942; a daughter, Susan Hess, who died in 1963, and his brothers, Finley Baird and Joseph S. Hess.

Frank Hess, who died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, are invited to a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium at Sherwood Oaks, 100 Norman Drive Cranberry Township. The Rev. David Streets, his church pastor, will officiate.
