Memorial to Flight 93 gets another $4.9M
SHANKSVILLE — The Flight 93 National Memorial will get another $4.9 million in federal funds.
The funding was announced Wednesday. It will be used to acquire the hundreds of acres organizers want for the sprawling memorial. The $58 million memorial and national park is to be placed on the site where Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.
The plane apparently crashed when passengers rushed the cockpit to try to retake control of the hijacked airliner. Forty passengers and crew were killed. The four hijackers also died.
The national memorial is scheduled to open in 2011, on the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
