SLIPPERY ROCK— Slippery Rock University senior women's soccer player Meghan McGrath was named first team all-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

McGrath is the first Rock women's soccer player to become a two-time first team all-American. Sarah Arsenault, who was honored in 2003, is the only other SRUplayer to receive the award once.

McGrath scored 11 goals and had three assists this season.

SLIPPERY ROCK— Ashley Martin, former assistant coach at Flagler College in Florida, was named top assistant to Slippery Rock University women's soccer coach Noreen Herlihy.Martin succeeds Steve Voltz, who served as Herlihy's assistant for two years.

PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Carlos Garcia was hired Tuesday as the organization's minor league infield coordinator.Garcia played for the Pirates from 1990-96 during a 13-season major league career. He was the Pirates' only All-Star representative when the game was played at Three Rivers Stadium in 1994.Also hired by Pittsburgh for minor league positions were Kimera Bartee as the outfield and baserunning coordinator, Troy Buckley as the pitching coordinator and Brad Fischer as the catching coordinator.Former Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield, fired Sept. 7 after more than six seasons on the job, was hired Tuesday by the Chicago Cubs as a professional scout.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — An academic cheating scandal could leave Florida State without as many as 25 players for its Music City Bowl game against Kentucky on New Year's Eve, coach Bobby Bowden said Tuesday.It was the latest off-field blow to a once-proud program trying to regain its footing as a national power."We have some players not traveling for one reason and some for another, including those who are ineligible for the bowl because of academic issues," Bowden said in a statement released by the university.Many of the players who won't be going to Nashville could also be ruled ineligible for some games next season for their connection to a cheating scandal earlier this year.Federal privacy laws prohibit the school from releasing names.
