NEW YORK — Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees finalized a $45 million, three-year contract that will keep the ace closer in pinstripes.

Rivera became a free agent after the season, then told the team last month he would accept their offer. It took a little time to complete the paperwork and a physical.

The 38-year-old reliever signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1990 and has only played for them in pro ball.

NEW YORK — Former major league infielder Fernando Vina admitted using human growth hormone in 2003 as he attempted to heal from injuries.Vina, now an ESPN baseball analyst, was named last week in the Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drugs. The report said he also purchased steroids from ex-New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, but Vina denied those claims.An All-Star second baseman with Milwaukee in 1998, Vina also played for Seattle, the Mets, St. Louis and Detroit during a 12-year career that ended in 2004.

NEW YORK — Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams was suspended without pay for one game by the NFL after his third illegal "horse collar" tackle of the season.Williams, whose use of the tactic led to the league passing a rule making it a 15-yard penalty, did it against Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in Sunday's 10-6 loss. He will miss Saturday night's game at Carolina, which will cost him $37,187 — one game's salary.

SEATTLE — Washington coach Tyrone Willingham let two members of his staff go, including defensive coordinator Kent Baer.Baer had been an assistant with Willingham for 13 years, dating to their days at Stanford and Notre Dame. Special teams and tight ends coach Bob Simmons will also not be back.Washington's defense was the worst in school history, allowing 446.4 yards per game.
