PITTSBURGH — The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is taking applications for its second annual $5,000 scholarship awarded to aspiring journalists.

The scholarship will be awarded in May 2008 in Pittsburgh at the annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner sponsored by The Press Club.

Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university for at least two years. They must be able to demonstrate why they should receive the award. Their primary residence must be in one of the 29 counties of Western Pennsylvania.

The scholarship money will be credited to the winner's account at their university or college. The winner also will receive a plaque in recognition of the award.

Deadline for applications is January 14. Review of applications begins March 1, and the winner will be notified by April 14.

Harmony — The Yobp-Eckstein village and toy railroad platform, is now on display at Harmony Museum's Wagner House annex.The 5-foot by 8-foot layout presents a snowy village scene with houses, church, barn and grist mill built of logs. A train trundles around the village perimeter and a trolley has its own loop. Inhabitants go about such activities as worshipping, caroling by the community Nativity manger display and Christmas tree, carrying well water, milking a cow and delivering firewood.Children are encouraged to look for a roaming skunk that moves frequently.The display's buildings, sleighs, wagons and boats were handcrafted between 1936 and the early 1940s by William Yobp of New Kensington for a Christmas living room display. When Ronald Eckstein of Forward Township built the platform in the late 1950s for his O-27 gauge train and trolley, he used some of Yobp's buildings to create the village.The Yobp-Eckstein Christmas Display can be seen during regular guided tours of the Harmony Museum until early January. The museum is open 1 to 4 p.m. daily except Mondays and holidays.
