HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission says hunters shot an estimated 2,004 bears during the three-day season from Nov. 19 to 21, and 23 bears during archery season from Nov. 14 to 15.

Game officials expect the number to increase because of an extended season in parts of the state through Saturday.

Last year, hunters killed 3,122 bears, which is the second highest harvest in Pennsylvania history. The record was set in 2005, when hunters killed 4,164 bears.

Official figures will available early 2008.

ADAMS TWP — Mars senior running back Billy Bair and head coach Scott Heinauer were selected as offensive player of the year and coach of the year by the Tri-County North section of the WPIAL.Bair rushed for 2,432 yards and scored 33 touchdowns in winning the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy as the top point producer in Butler County football for the second straight year. Heinauer guided the Planets to a 9-2 overall record, including a section title and a playoff win.Other Mars players gaining first-team all-league honors were lineman Brody Maughan-Evanson, center Nolan Nearhoof, kicker Chris Karns and linebacker Dan King.Gaining first team honors from Summit Academy were tight end Terrance Davis, quarterback LaRon Green, defensive lineman Alex Rosario and linebacker Nelson Ramos.

SLIPPERY ROCK— Slippery Rock University senior women's soccer player Meghan McGrath was named third-team Daktronic Inc. All-America by NCAADivision IIsports information directors.McGrath led The Rock with 11 goals and five assists as SRU finished with a best-ever 17-5-1 record and won the PSACWest. She is third on the SRU women's soccer career scoring list with 101 points on 38 goals and a school-record 25 assists.

SLIPPERY ROCK— Slippery Rock University senior offensive tackle Mike Butterworth was named first-team Daktronic Inc. All-Northeast Region in voting by the region's sports information directors.Defensive end Tyler Boudreau, all-purpose performer Paul Favers and running back Corey Manfull grabbed second-team honors. Boudreau tied the school record of 12 sacks in a season and led the PSACwith 17 tackles for loss.Favers ranked seventh in the PSACwith 117.1 all-purpose yards per game and Manfull finished second in the PSACwith 1,258 rushing yards, despite playing in only nine games.
