BYU duo help take down No. 6 Louisville
Between Jonathan Tavernari's dazzling outside shooting and Trent Plaisted's dominant inside play, No. 6 Louisville seemed to be facing a two-man team for most of the night at the Las Vegas Invitational.
Brigham Young's two stars were a whole lot more than the Cardinals could handle while they're playing without two stars of their own.
Tavernari hit five 3-pointers while scoring a career-best 29 points, and BYU capitalized on Louisville's injuries and weariness for a 78-76 victory Friday night.
Plaisted added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars (5-0) as they held a narrow lead for most of the game with the inside-outside punch of their top two scorers, who scored all but six of BYU's second-half points.
Louisville is the highest-ranked opponent beaten by the Cougars since Dec. 21, 1965, when BYU knocked off No. 2 St. Joseph's.
No. 1 North Carolina 99, Old Dominion 82
Ty Lawson scored a career-high 23 points, Tyler Hansbrough had 27 and top-ranked North Carolina advanced to the final of the Las Vegas Invitational with a 99-82 victory over Old Dominion.
Wayne Ellington added 17 points for the Tar Heels (4-0), who pulled away with a strong second half to avoid the upset bug that claimed No. 6 Louisville two hours earlier at the Orleans Arena, ruining the perennial powers' hopes for a tantalizing early-season matchup.
No. 2 UCLA 81, Yale 47
In his first few weeks at UCLA, Kevin Love has shown he can put up spectacular numbers.
Now the freshman star has shown he has a flair for the dramatic, too.
Love froze fans headed for the exits when he fell on a Yale player after a tip-in and twisted his left ankle. He forced a collective moan when he limped to the locker room with his shoe off moments later with just over seven minutes left in the second-ranked Bruins' 81-47 blowout of the Bulldogs on Friday night.
But Love ran back into the gym and waved to a roaring crowd minutes later, taking his seat on the bench with 3:45 to go and the Bruins leading by 39.
In what looks to be a more serious injury for the already-hobbled Bruins, starting center Alfred Aboya took an elbow to the right eye in the first half. He experienced blurred vision and was taken to UCLA Medical Center for X-rays.
Aboya suffered a fracture of the orbital floor, UCLA spokesman Ryan Finney said. Aboya will have to undergo further evaluation early next week.
No. 23 Virginia 100, Penn 85
Sean Singletary has another chance to give his hometown fans in Philadelphia a game to remember.
Adrian Joseph had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Singletary scored 16 points and No. 23 Virginia was unstoppable early on its way to a 100-85 victory over Penn on Friday night in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
