JOHNSONBURG— Karns City boys soccer players Cody Zabicki and Jonathon Burns had an assist each in the Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League's Senior game Tuesday.
Zabicki also had two saves in goal as the South defeated the North, 5-2. Karns City coach Jim Grenninger coached the South team.
CLARION— Moniteau quarterback Tyler Armagost has been named the Clarion Hospital Athletic Medicine Program (CHAMP) KSACPlayer of the Week.Armagost threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 77 yards and three TDs in the Warriors' 38-12 football playoff victory over Brookville.
Former Slippery Rock University receiver-return specialist D.J. Flick is a wide receiver with the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Rough Riders and will be in this Sunday's Grey Cup game for the CFLchampionship.Flick, 27, has caught 70 passes for 1,020 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Rough Riders (12-6), who face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-7-1) for the league title.
HARRISBURG — So far, the bears seem to be winning.State officials say the first-day harvest in Pennsylvania's three-day black bear hunting season was 30 percent below the 2006 figures.Pennsylvania Game Commission officials say hunters started the 2007 season by taking a preliminary harvest of slightly more than 1,000 black bears in 49 counties.Game Commission employees say they processed 1,005 bears at the agency's check stations on the opening day of the three-day statewide season.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped first baseman Josh Phelps off their 40-man roster in a surprise move and claimed right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier off waivers from the Houston Astros.The Pirates firmed up their offseason roster by designating Phelps, right-hander Josh Sharpless and Shane Youman for assignment. Sharpless and Youman must pass through waivers before they could be assigned to a Pirates farm club, and Phelps cannot resign with the Pirates until May 15.In addition to claiming Barthmaier, the Pirates promoted right-handers Olivo Astacio and Ronald Belisario and infielder Brian Bixler to their 40-man roster.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Glen Hanlon was fired as coach of the NHL-worst Washington Capitals, with the team off to its slowest start in 26 years.Hanlon was fired after a 5-1 home loss to the Atlanta Thrashers, Washington's fifth consecutive defeat.He will be replaced on an interim basis by Bruce Boudreau.
