Fend

Charles R. "Chic" Fend Sr., 82, of the Lowrie House, formerly of Dutchtown Road, died Friday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 3, 1925, in Butler, he was a son of James and Emily Cottrill Fend.

He was a veteran of World War II. While in the service, he was part of the 20th Armored Division, which was one of three Army divisions to take part in the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp on April 29, 1945.

Mr. Fend had worked as a heat treater at Pangborn Industries for 37 years and retired in 1986.

He was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. He also was a charter member of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department, belonged to the Slovak Club in Lyndora and the Bull Creek Sportsmen's Club and was a past volunteer for Special Olympics.

He loved playing the lottery, watching Pittsburgh sports teams on television and working in his yard.

Surviving are his wife, Jennie L. Lesnik Fend, whom he married Oct. 16, 1948; four sons, Charles R. Fend Jr. and his wife, Linda Fend, Edward P. Fend and Timothy J. Fend and his wife, Tammy Fend, all of Butler, and Larry J. Fend of Prospect; four daughters, Mrs. George (Donna) Ochaba of Prospect, Mrs. John (Terry) Smith of Cabot and Carol L. Hepler and Joyce K. Fend, both of Butler; five sisters, Mrs. John (Mary Lou) Davis of Butler, Mrs. Pearl Osche of Meridian and Mrs. John (Alice) Day, Mrs. Mabel Mulneix, and Mrs. Conrad (Thelda) Geibel, all of Butler.

He also is survived by nine grandchildren, Patrick, Jonathan, Nicole, Jennifer, Matthew and Jordan Fend, Gregory and Julie Ochaba and Lacy Hepler; three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Allie and Harrison; his aunt, Eleanor Lesnik of Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Six brothers preceded him in death.

<B>FEND </B>— Friends of Charles R. "Chic" Fend, who died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home, </B>201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, Franklin Street, with the Rev. Pierre Falkenhan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Church Cemetery.The Women's Council of St. Peter Church will recite the rosary at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at the church.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
