2 monkeys returned to owner

EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. — Two exotic monkeys were returned to a Pennsylvania wildlife compound Monday after apparently being stolen from a greenhouse where teenagers believed marijuana was being grown.

An unidentified woman contacted the monkeys' owner, Grant Kemmerer, to say she had one of the animals and was trying to find the other, Kemmerer said. She called again later to arrange for their return, he said.

The woman was accompanied by a teenage boy when she gave Kemmerer the monkeys — a spot-nose guenon and a mon guenon — and sped away. She did not give her name or phone number, he said.

The two monkeys were stolen earlier Monday from Wild World of Animals, a Washington County wildlife facility owned by Kemmerer. He keeps 80 animals at the facility, which specializes in educational programs as well as fairs and festivals.

He said he and his wife returned home from an out-of-town show at about 2:30 a.m. Monday and saw that the greenhouse door was open. Three cages had been destroyed and two of the monkeys were gone. Another monkey was still in the greenhouse.

Kemmerer said he believed some teenagers thought he was growing marijuana in the greenhouse where the monkeys were kept, based on what the woman told him. He said he grows tropical plants in the greenhouse to feed the rare animals.

Kemmerer credited widespread media reporting for the animals' return.
