PITTSBURGH — A sequestered Allegheny County jury will return to continue deliberating whether a Pittsburgh man should be sentenced to death for murdering a state trooper.
The death penalty phase of 32-year-old Leslie Mollett's trial began Thursday. The jury began deliberating before 8 p.m. and didn't reach a verdict, so they were to continue Friday.
Mollett was convicted by the same jury on Wednesday on first-degree murder and other charges for shooting state police Cpl. Joseph Pokorny on Dec. 12, 2005.
The jury found that Mollett fought with Pokorny after the traffic stop and shot the trooper with his own weapon.
If the jury does not unanimously vote for the death penalty, Mollett will automatically be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
