IN BRIEF
TUCKER'S TOWN, Bermuda — U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera overcame an atrocious start with a spectacular finish Wednesday to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, outlasting Padraig Harrington in a playoff.
Cabrera recovered from a triple bogey on the opening hole that put him five shots behind with a birdie-eagle finish to close with a 2-under 68 and get into a playoff with the British Open champion at Mid-Ocean Club.
Cabrera finally beat Harrington on the third extra hole with another booming tee shot and a 4-iron into 18 feet on the par-5 18th. Cabrera took two putts for birdie, which was all he needed when Harrington hit into a deep bunker off the tee and still had 4 feet for par when the Argentine tapped in.
Cabrera finished at 4-under 136, earning $600,000 from the tournament restricted to major champions.
Jim Furyk, the replacement for PGA champion Tiger Woods, had a 67 to finish third at 138. Masters champion Zach Johnson had a 68 to finish another shot back.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — First-year Atlanta coach Bobby Petrino announced Wednesday Byron Leftwich would replace Joey Harrington as the Falcons' starting quarterback for the rest of the season. The decision wasn't difficult for Petrino after the offense failed to score off three New York turnovers in a 31-10 loss to the Giants on Monday night. Petrino indicated that Leftwich might have played against New York if he hadn't missed so much practice with a mild ankle sprain.Leftwich, who went 24-20 in four years with Jacksonville, signed a two-year, $7 million contract last month after being released.
ATLANTA — Bob Hartley was fired Wednesday as coach of the Atlanta Thrashers, who have lost their first six games and are the only NHL team without a victory. General manager Don Waddell will be the coach until a replacement is found. He has no timetable for a hiring.
