Mixed verdict in van into police barracks case
KITTANNING — An Armstrong County man who drove a delivery van into a state police barracks has been acquitted of attempted murder, but a jury convicted him of other offenses.
The panel found 32-year-old Roy Chaivarlis, of Yatesboro, guilty of driving under the influence, recklessly endangering a trooper and related charges Thursday. A judge found him guilty of summary driving offenses.
Chaivarlis drove into the Kittanning barracks on April 27, 2006. No one was injured, although the exterior and lobby were heavily damaged.
Troopers said Chaivarlis told them he hated police.
His attorney says he didn't intend for it to happen and that he has a history of mental illness and alcohol dependency.
