STATE COLLEGE — Winning a game by forfeit doesn't appeal to Joe Paterno, even if it means a victory over arch-nemesis Michigan.

So as the Big Ten sorts out whether the Wolverines should be disciplined for using an ineligible player during last month's victory over Penn State, Paterno is concentrating on trying to win games the old-fashioned way.

"I know we got licked," Paterno said Tuesday. "I don't have any interest in it. We lost. That's up to somebody else to make the decision."

The Big Ten has said a decision on whether Michigan should face any discipline — of which, forfeiture could be an option — may take weeks.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Slippery Rock High graduates Matt Hogg and Ian Shirey were recently named two of the top Youngstown State University football players in Stambaugh Stadium history.Hogg was an offensive lineman for the Penguins from 1994-97 while Shirey played center for the team from 1996-99.

PITTSBURGH— Dr. Daniel Gray, a chiropractor in Butler, was one of 12 anglers representing Pennsylvania in the Bass Federation Mid-Atlantic Divisional Championship on Pittsburgh's three rivers Sept. 26 through 28.Pennsylvania won that event, defeating teams from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware.

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock won the girls age 15-to-19 division of the Plantations Junior Golf Tour event last weekend.Rinker carded a 92-85-177. Her brother, Brett Rinker, was third in the boys 12-to-13 division, carding a 75-77-152.

NEW YORK — NASCAR was finalizing a deal Tuesday night with Nationwide Insurance to sponsor its No. 2 series beginning in 2008, The Associated Press has learned.Nationwide will replace Anheuser-Busch, which has sponsored the second-tier Busch Series for 26 seasons but said earlier this year it would end its entitlement deal at the conclusion of this season.
