Surprising Redskins knock off Eagles on road, 20-12

PHILADELPHIA — Last year's Washington Redskins were a cocky bunch that expected to make a Super Bowl run and finished in last place instead.

That's why they won't get carried away with early success.

Jason Campbell effectively managed the offense and a tough defense shut down Donovan McNabb, giving Washington a 20-12 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

The Redskins (2-0) are tied with Dallas atop the NFC East. Meanwhile, the Eagles (0-2) hardly resemble the team that won its fifth division title in six years with a strong finish last season.

"It really feels great, but we have to put this in perspective because we will see them again," wide receiver Santana Moss said. "It's early in the season and every win helps."

It's quite a start for the Redskins after going 5-11 — the worst season under Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs. They probably won't sneak up on any teams now that they've shown vast improvement.

"I don't think it was a statement we made," Gibbs said. "We knew what we were up against in a tough place."

Campbell threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Cooley late in the second quarter and Clinton Portis scored on a 6-yard run early in the fourth.
