Man shoots, kills intruder
PITTSBURGH — A man fatally shot an armed intruder who awoke him while he was sleeping, police said.
Officers found Charles Long, 32, of McKees Rocks, lying at the bottom of a staircase at a home in the city's Esplen neighborhood early Sunday, police said. He had been shot in the head and torso.
The Allegheny County medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
A 27-year-old man and his girlfriend told police they were asleep when they heard someone kick open the front door and enter, Pittsburgh police Lt. Kevin Kraus said in a statement. The man confronted the armed intruder on the steps, disarmed him and shot him, Kraus said.
Police will consult with the county district attorney before determining whether any charges are warranted, Kraus said.
Police did not identify the man or his girlfriend.
