HARRISBURG — The state Insurance Department will allow up to 35,000 uninsured adults on a waiting list for state-subsidized health insurance an opportunity to enroll in the program.
The latest effort to increase the number of working adults covered by the adult Basic insurance program will reduce the current waiting list to 76,000 people, department spokeswoman Rosanne Placey said Thursday. More than 44,000 adults are currently enrolled in the program.
The department has periodically offered opportunities for adults on the waiting list to enroll whenever it can free up additional money for adultBasic through steps such as reducing spending in other areas of its budget, Placey said.
People covered by adultBasic pay a monthly premium of $33.50, while those on the waiting list have the option of obtaining coverage for $305 a month — the full cost of the health benefits.
The department will extend benefits to anyone who applied for them before April 30, 2006, Placey said.
PITTSBURGH — A 20-inch water line burst Thursday afternoon in the city's Oakland neighborhood, sending rushing water into homes and businesses. The break happened at about 12:30 p.m. at a pumping station, said Greg Tutsock of the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority. The rushing water caused pavement on the streets to crack.Authorities said residents in several neighborhoods may be without water service or have low water pressure because of the break. The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority and the Allegheny County Health Department advised residents to boil their water. They said tap water could be used for sanitation purposes, such as bathing and brushing teeth.Officials said there have been no indications of harmful bacteria in the water, and the advisory was only precautionary until lab tests are done.Officials said it wasn't clear what caused the break.
