PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Passion have been awarded a full membership in the Independent Women's Football League and will play in the Eastern Conference beginning with the 2008 season.The team's home field, colors and traditions will remain the same.The Passion, the National Women's Football Association champions this past season, will compete against teams from Washington D.C., Detroit, New York, Boston and Chicago. The league boasts 30 teams from across the country.
FLORENCE, Ky. — The Slippery Rock Sliders saw a 7-2 lead slip away in an 8-7, 11-inning loss to the Florence Freedom Monday night.The Sliders (27-61) scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead, but the Freedom scored five of their own in the bottom of the frame and received an RBI single from first baseman Beau Blacken in the bottom of the 11th.Slippery Rock's Jason Cline shouldered the loss after pitching 3Z\c innings. He was preceded by starter Kory Bucklew and reliever Jon Dandridge.First baseman Ryley Westman tallied three hits for the Sliders and outfielder Anthony Albano had three RBI.
HOUSTON — Manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura were fired Monday by the Houston Astros, less than two years after leading the team to its first World Series appearance.Bench coach Cecil Cooper was appointed interim manager and team president Tal Smith will serve as interim general manager.
