NASCAR's Stewart, Schrader race at Lernerville Thursday

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart leaves his garage after practice for the NASCAR Pennsylvania 500 auto race in Long Pond, Pa., at Pocono Raceway on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007.

BUFFALO TWP— Nextel Cup drivers Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader will compete in the 35-lap Late Model race Thursday night at Lernerville Speedway.

Stewart and Schrader both own Late Models and have competed at various dirt tracks throughout this season.

Thursday's race at Lernerville is billed as "Stars of NASCAR" Night and will feature the UMP Modifieds as well.

Stewart has won three of the last five races on the Nextel Cup circuit — including Sunday's race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. — and owns 32 career NASCAR victories. He owns the Eldora Speedway dirt track in Ohio as well.

Schrader is a 20-year veteran of NASCARracing and has four career victories on the circuit. He is a co-promoter of I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.

Both drivers got started in racing as youngsters in go-karts. Stewart began go-kart racing at age 8 and won his first championship in karting in 1980.

Schrader got in a go-kart at age 3, as his father used a cable to tie the kart to a post and allow his son to ride in circles.

Schrader is quoted in his website as saying:"I would race every day if I had the opportunity." He averages 90 to 100 races per year as it is.

Stewart is a two-time NASCARpoints champion.

Thursday's 35-lap feature will pay $3,000 to the winner. Local Late Model drivers will receive 20 points for participating in the event.

Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Reserved tickets are $26 for adults, $23 for seniors and $21 for children 17 and under. General admission is $24 for adults, $21 for seniors, $19 for students ages 11-17 with children 10-under admitted free.
