Infant remains found in Mercyhurst apartment

PITTSBURGH — The remains of an infant or fetus were found in the on-campus apartment of a Mercyhurst College student-athlete and authorities were trying to determine if the woman had a miscarriage or if the baby was born alive.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said the remains were removed from the apartment late Sunday, but authorities did not immediately know the gestational age or cause of death.

An autopsy was planned for Monday afternoon "in hopes of determining the gestational age, primarily, and ... whether it was a stillbirth, a live birth, and the presence or absence of traumatic injuries or congenital defects," Cook said.

No charges were immediately filed in the case.
