McCANDLESS — The Butler Township 14-year-old Federation Pony baseball team dropped a 14-3 decision to Johnstown Monday in the PONY World Series Zones Tournament.

A win would have sent the squad to the PONYLeague World Series in Washington, Pa.

Butler Township started the tournament with a first-round bye, then defeated North Hills 12-2 and Vesta 7-4.

That put Butler Township (29-4) in the "King Seat" meaning the team would have to lose twice to be eliminated from the tournament.

They lost to Johnstown 3-1 in the first championship game on Sunday before following up with Monday's loss.

GROVE CITY — Brandon Mosley took first place in the 12-to-15 age group while Alex Conti won the 8-to-11 age group last Wednesday in the 13th annual Willow Hills Golf Center Junior Tournament.Mario Conti took second place and Hunter Viscusi was third in the younger category, while Jacob Cline and Nicki Conti were second and third, respectively in the older category.

FRANKLIN PARK — The North-South Buffalo All-Star travel team beat Kennedy Township 9-6 in the final game of the Ingomar-Franklin Park Gold baseball tournament, which was held July 14 to 19.The 8- and 9-year-old all-stars beat Mars 12-2 in the first game, Hampton 7-2 in the second game, Bradford-Marshall-Pine Township 27-10 in game three and Ingomar 9-6 in the semifinals.The players also were runners-up at the Karns City Tournament earlier this month, where they beat Butler City, East Butler and Center Township.Team members are Michael Frazetta, Alan Braden, Matthew Wolfe, Stone Haberstroh, Austin Uric, Nathan Falchetti, Zack Stokes, Joshua Beale, Derek Jones, Justin Brestensky, Clay Westendorf, Dennis Wuyscik and Mac Christy.Coaches are Scott Wolfe, Jerry Stokes, Mike Beale, Keith Jones, Michael Frazetta, Todd Cyphert, Mike Brestensky, Dennis Wuyscik and Mike Falchetti.

CENTER TWP — The first-year 10-and-under Center Township softball team placed second in four Butler County tournaments this season.Team members are Catlin Blackwell, Hope Wonderling, Madison Graham, Kaylee Noah, Emily Huber, Dana Miller, Lexi Monks, Sarah Young, Tia Winchester, Hannah Hawryliak and Sarah Bartley.The head coach is Michelle Bartley and her assistant is Mike Metrick.

ALTOONA — Blair County Ballpark will remain the site of the four annual PIAA baseball championship games through at least the 2010 season.The Altoona stadium has hosted the PIAA Class A, AA, AAA and AAAA championship games since 2005. On Monday, the PIAA extended the rights to include the 2008, 2009 and 2010 tournaments.Other areas expressing interest in being the championship games site were Washington, Harrisburg/Hershey, Millersville and York County.

PITTSBURGH — Prosecutors on Monday withdrew a marijuana possession charge against University of Pittsburgh defensive end Joe Clermond.Clermond was arrested July 21 after attending a concert at Mellon Arena. He was riding in a car with other people and the car was stopped by police and a small amount of marijuana was found inside.Clermond, of Tampa, Fla., denied smoking marijuana. The charge was withdrawn at his preliminary hearing.
