Girl faces charge

Father was shot to death in bed

BUENA VISTA, Pa. — A 13-year-old girl was charged Monday with fatally shooting her father while he was in bed, in a home police said was overrun with animals and in "deplorable condition."

Matthew Booth, 34, was found dead of a shotgun wound to the head.

His daughter told investigators she used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot him in the face, according to a police affidavit.

The shooting occurred at about 2:20 a.m. Monday in Elizabeth Township, about 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Booth's daughter was charged as an adult with criminal homicide and ordered held without bail. She appeared in municipal court late Monday wearing a maroon county jail uniform, her hands and ankles cuffed.

The girl's mother, Michelle Fazek of McKeesport, who arrived at the courthouse after the arraignment, said she and Matthew Booth had been separated for about two years.

A police complaint did not identify a motive in the killing.

But Fazek said her daughter had been abused and that she had complained several times to county child welfare officials that her daughter was living in squalor.

"I just want to see her," Fazek said. "She must be so scared."

The Associated Press does not identify victims of possible sexual abuse.

Matthew Booth's neighbor Suzanne Gruber told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the girl had told her she had killed her father because she "just couldn't take it any more." Gruber said the girl also told her she had been abused.

In an interview with KDKA-TV, Gruber said the girl said "she messed up the house to make it look like somebody had broken in and she ended up shooting him in the face."

Fazek said her daughter attended cyberschool.
