Ex-principal sentenced in school theft
ERIE — A former high school principal who stole school equipment and sold it on eBay was sentenced to two to 23 months in prison.
Tom Maciulewicz Jr., 37, was also sentenced Wednesday to two years of probation by Erie County Judge William R. Cunningham.
Maciulewicz, who resigned from the Millcreek Township School District amid the allegations in September, pleaded guilty in May to three counts of theft. He admitted stealing musical instruments, laptops and other items and buying nearly $5,000 worth of gift cards with district funds.
Cunningham told Maciulewicz that his actions could affect generations of students. "It is important for the integrity of the institution that you be honorable," he said.
Maciulewicz, who apologized and has paid $18,430 in restitution, said he wants "to do right the rest of my life."
His attorney, William Scarpitti said financial problems caused Maciulewicz to commit the crimes.
"He had an incredible spending pattern," Scarpitti said.
