Local man makes living outside of race cars

UNIONVILLE— Terry Kibler does not drive a race car. He does work fulltime in the sport, however.

And he is definitely a man on the go.

Kibler, 32, a Unionville resident and member of the volunteer fire department there, is also the safety coordinator of Eldora Speedway in New Weston, Ohio, and safety director of the ARCATruck Series.

"I make my living at the race tracks," he said.

Kibler is on hand for all 27 events held at Eldora — the dirt track owned by NASCARdriver Tony Stewart — from April 21 through Oct. 13.

He also travels with the ARCATruck Series, which consists of 13 events from April 21 through Oct. 13 in Kentucky, Ohio, Delaware and Illinois, among other places.

Keeping drivers and fans safe on race day is Kibler's business.

"I've done consulting work for sanctioned racing organizations," he said. "My name's been out there and that's led me to these positions."

Eldora Speedway general manager Larry Kemp hired Kibler to oversee the safety of that facility.

"Terry's in charge of the personnel that's involved with keeping everything and everybody safe,"Kemp said. "He's put together quite a crew."

Kibler travels roughly 300 miles to Eldora for racing shows there. He also makes the trip for any office work or training sessions that require his presence.

"I'm involved in the technical side of the cars and equipment, and the rescue side for the drivers,"Kibler said. "I have to know what's going on.

"If I'm going to make sure the equipment's safe, I have to know how the equipment works."

That's where the training sessions come in.

"Because Terry and his crew are often the first to arrive on an accident scene at a race, they need to know where the car's on/off switches are and how they work,"Kemp said. "The driver may not be in a position to get to them."

ARCAran a truck series race at Eldora last year and ARCAsafety services manager Marc Williams talked with Kibler that night.

"Terry came down to Daytona with us last year,"Williams said. "This year, he wanted to ride in our safety truck ... One thing led to another and he became part of our team."

Kibler is very hands-on with the truck series, inspecting neck braces, safety barriers, track surfaces, catch fences, etc.

"He inspects the interior of the trucks, the drivers' safety net, the steering wheel for proper padding ... He's very thorough,"Williams said.

"His hands are pretty full on race weekends,"Williams added.

Kiber has been involved in racing since 1988 — but never as a driver.

""I've always been involved in the safety aspect,"he said. "That's more than enough for me."
