Butler Eagle Amateur Open set

The Butler Eagle Amateur Open will be held Aug. 12 at Hiland Golf Course.

There will be shotgun starts at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. with a total of four flights. The format is 18-hole stroke play with a seniors 18-hole net stroke play included with the entry fee for those 50 and older.

The $60 fee includes golf, greens fee, skins game (by flights) and prizes. Cart is not included.

Matt Maloy, 17, of Butler carded a 72 to finish second in the Kings Tri-State Junior Golf Tournament held Monday at Glenn Gary Golf Course in Latrobe.Maloy will be a junior at Butler High School this fall.

Butler County football players Matt Endlish and Vince Papley will continue their academic and football careers at Thiel College.Endlish threw for 1,338 yards and 13 touchdowns as Karns City's quarterback last season. Papley led Slippery Rock High School with 13 receptions for 317 yards. Both players play defense as well.Jack Leipheimer is entering his seventh year as Thiel's coach. The Tomcats won the Presidents' Athletic Conference in 2005, reaching the second round of the NCAADivision IIIplayoffs.

Nathan Smith, a member of the St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, carded a 4-under-par 206 to win the 107th West Penn Amateur golf tournament Tuesday at Sunnehanna Country Club.Smith defeated Mike Van Sickle of Wexford on the first playoff hole to win the 54-hole event. Cameron Peterson of Grove City finished 14th, Rob Voltz of Butler 21st and Jon Pratkanis of Butler 29th.
