Murdick benefits from black flag
BUFFALO TWP— For Dave Murdick and Brian Swartzlander, black symbolized good Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Not so for Kevin Bolland and Jeremiah Shingledecker.
Murdick claimed his first Modified feature win of the season in a bizarre finish. Bolland, who swapped the lead with Shingledecker through most of the feature, was black-flagged and disqualified from the race after a restart with two laps remaining resulted in points contender Del Rougeux Jr. going to the pits and three other cars, including Shingledecker's, getting towed off the track.
And Swartzlander, bidding to become the first Lernerville driver since Bob Wearing Sr. in 1986 to win five consecutive features here, wound up finishing second.
"I'd rather be lucky than good sometimes,"Murdick said. "This was one of those nights. I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
"I've been struggling all year. We were due a bit of good luck."
Murdick figured he'd have to settle for third place, behind Bolland or Shingledecker, before their two cars came together off Turn 4 during a 24th-lap restart.
"I thought my car was OK, but then I dropped a cylinder out there,"the Slippery Rock driver of the No. 61 said. "I was just riding it out then."
But Bolland's No. 777 and Shingledecker's No. 37 bumped each other on the restart. Bolland, who started outside, nearly went into the wall but straightened out and accelerated between turns 1 and 2.
Bolland's car came into Shingledecker's at that point, causing the No. 37 to spin. Tim Doran and Andy Priest got tangled up in the mess as well and all three cars needed a tow while Bolland continued around the track.
The black flag came out — signaling unsportsmanlike conduct for Bolland — and the No. 777 was through for the evening. Murdick became the race leader and Swartzlander jumped from sixth to third.
Swartzlander was trying to win a race after starting from the back of the field for the second straight week. He was able to pass Tom Winkle for second, but couldn't get around Murdick for the victory.
"I'll gladly take second after what happened to us in the heat race,"Swartzlander said. "I knew my car wasn't very good for the feature. Still, it almost worked out for us."
Swartzlander damaged the front end of the No. 83 when he collided with John Durci's No. 34 during their heat race.
Shingledecker has won two features at Lernerville this season and figured he had a third one.
"I had a real good shot at it, anyway," he said. "All I know is I was sideways by turn 2 and (Bolland) was still accelerating. He never lifted. He didn't try to avoid anything."
Bolland said the initial contact off turn 4 was Shingledecker's doing.
"You have to be able to hold your line there and he didn't,"Bolland said. "He started sliding and almost put me into the wall, but that kind of stuff is ignored.
"What people need to do is buy a video, look at it and see what happened. Everything happened under race conditions," he added "In a restart like that, I'm right there with him, my tires had more bite like they did all night. ... If a guy can't hold his line in that situation, things like this are gonna happen."
In other feature races:
n Ed Lynch Jr. started up front and led from wire to wire to claim his fifth Sprint feature win of the season here, 87th of his career at Lernerville and 199th career feature triumph overall.
The Apollo Rocket won the race while breaking in a new car.
"I was feeling this new car out and it felt pretty good,"Lynch said. "Now we'll work on it and try to make it better.
"My goal this year is to reach 200 wins. To do something like that, you're either good or you're old. I guess I'm a little of both."
n Matt Lux of Franklin won his second career Lernerville Late Model feature, grabbing the lead from Saxonburg's Alex Ferree on the 11th lap and keeping it.
Lux won his first Late Model feature here last August.
"It's been a terrible, terrible start to the year for us,"he said. "I didn't know if I'd ever get out of this slump."
Lux held off Ferree and runner up Lynn Geisler on four restarts from the 17th lap on. The race had 11 total restarts.
n Butch Lambert of Mars won his second Pure Stock feature of the year at the Sarver track, changing leads repeatedly with Paul Schreckengost.
Lambert took the lead for good on a restart with two laps remaining.
Notes:There were 104 cars in the pits. ... Priest won his first Modified heat race of the season while Seneca Valley graduate Mike Pegher Jr. won his eighth Pure Stock heat race of the campaign. ... West Sunbury's Chuck Sarver flipped his No. 88 Late Model during a heat race, but was unhurt. ... The two-day Firecracker 100 Late Model event takes place next Friday and Saturday night at the speedway.
