'Slow Ride' to victory lane
BUFFALO TWP — David Scott may be known to race fans as "Slow Ride" and, to some extent, it's true.
In Friday's Late Models race at Lernerville Speedway, Scott calmly worked his way up from 15th place to the lead in the first 18 laps, then rolled to his first victory of the year at the track.
The pivotal point of the race for Scott came at the caution on lap 13 when Mike Blose was leading, Lynn Geisler was second, Matt Lux third and Scott fourth.
By the 16th lap, Scott moved into second behind Blose then took the lead for good at on lap 18.
"He did what I thought he would do," said Scott. "He left me just enough room to get by on top."
One final caution came out on lap 20, when Brett Rhebergen hit Geisler, which knocked the Cranberry Township resident from the race.
Gary Lyle, who was fourth, ended up in second, while Alex Ferree of Saxonburg was third, with Rhebergen, Blose and Lux taking the next three spots.
"The car was pretty good tonight," said Scott. "Not great, but pretty good ... Early on, I thought it would be a slugfest."
The race got off to an shaky start when Shane McMeans flipped his car flipped in the first turn of the race. Despite the horrific state of the car, McMeans was not seriously injured.
With Scott coming back from the 15th spot to grab the checkered flag, Brian Swartzlander did him one better — or nine better — in the Modified race
By rule, Swartzlander, who had won the previous three races at Lernerville, had to start the race in the back of the pack.
He was slotted in at 24th in the race, but when it came time for the feature race, Swartzlander worked his way back to the front, making a late push for his fifth overall win of the year and 53rd in his career at Lernerville.
"I didn't think I'd win it about halfway through," said Swartzlander. "I thought top five.
"I'd seen Rex (King Jr.) drop down low and Del (Rougeux Jr.) and Kevin (Bolland) low, so I hit the top. I could have gone over the hill. That's how really high I went," Swartzlander added.
Rougeux and Bolland were 1-2 for the first eight laps before the two would swap positions at various points on the track.
Swartzlander bided his time, moving up the track before grabbing the win on the final lap.
"In the first two or three laps, we moved up to 11th or 12th," said Swartzlander. "That gave us a bit more time to work our way up."
Bolland wound up second, Rougeux third and King fourth. For as quickly as Swartzlander finished, it even caught him by surprise.
"I didn't know the race was over, but I looked up and saw we had won,"' said Swartzlander. "That was awesome."
n In the Pure Stocks, Paul Schreckengost held the lead after nine laps in this 15-lap contest, but Mike Pegher Jr. of Wexford was lurking close behind. Pegher soon took the lead and eked out the victory, his second of the season.
"I knew he was down there," said Pegher on Schreckengost. "I didn't think I'd get him on the outside."
Bob Egley of Kittanning, Butch Lambert of Mars and Bob Lipinski of Pittsburgh rounded out the top five.
• In the Sprint feature, the race went off without a hitch, going the 25 laps without a single caution flag.
The race was a two-man race from the outset as Rimersburg's Scott Priester and Kittanning's Rod George battled the entire race.
Priester led the first 14 laps before George took over the lead for good. Priester would finish second, Carl Bowser of Sarver was third, Charlie Holben of Cabot fourth and Troy Little of Vineyard, Australia placed fifth.
Notes: There were 106 cars in the pits, including 29 Late Models and Pure Stocks apiece ... Fab Four racing is scheduled for next Friday.
