Starr

John D. Starr, 84, of Quincy, Ill., died May 8 at Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

Born Dec. 18, 1922, in Butler, he was a son of Donald D. and Esther F. Dunmyre Starr.

He had worked with antennas and transmitters for several companies including GE. While with GE, he installed transmitters on top of the Empire State Building and the Sears Tower. He retired in 1986 as the supervisor of antenna manufacturing at the Harris Corp.

Mr. Starr served with the Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific, Admiralty Islands.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara J. Ball and her husband, Thomas, of Southold, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Heather Ball of Southold, Brian Ball of Boston, Jennifer Booth of Dallas, and Adam and Eric Booth, both of Quincy; a brother, James Starr of Clearwater, Fla.; and two sisters, Becky Flowers and her husband, Robert, of Grove City and Ruth Richards and her husband, Herb, of Sarver. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive.

His wife, Marian E. Lemon Starr, whom he married July 16, 1949, in McKeesport, died July 26, 1985. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Booth; and a very dear friend, Mary Hagerbaumer.
