Paints topple Sliders with late surge
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Chillicothe scored seven runs in the final three innings Monday night and defeated the Slippery Rock Sliders, 8-2, in Frontier League baseball.
Brian Vickers hit a two-run homer to give the Sliders a 2-1 lead in the second inning. That margin held up until the sixth, when the Paints' Travis Garcia led off with a game-tying home run to center off losing pitcher Caleb McConnell.
McConnell was relieved by Justin Robinson after allowing a single to the next hitter. But the Paints (3-3) got to the Sliders' bullpen for five runs.
Slippery Rock scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning without a hit and hung on for a 5-4 win over Chillicothe on Sunday.
The Sliders (2-4) lost to the Paints 10-7 on Saturday, although Slippery Rock High and SRU grad Jason Curry homered in that game.
Curry was the hero of Sunday's game without having to swing the bat.
The Sliders cleanup hitter walked with the bases loaded to spark the three-run rally in the eighth.
Slippery Rock took advantage of a Chillicothe error, a hit batter and three walks in the inning.
The rally made a winner of reliever Brian Baxter, who relieved starter Nick Tracy to start the sixth inning.
Tracy struck out five and walked two in five innings.
Greg Lasiniski worked an inning and a third to pick up the save, his second of the season.
Travis Chapman and Cy Donald had two hits apiece for the Sliders to account for all four hits for Slippery Rock.
The Sliders open their home schedule today at Critchfield Park against the Florence (Ky.) Freedom at 7:05 p.m.
