Several members of the Moniteau and Karns City softball teams were rewarded for their play this season with spots on the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference all-star squad. They include:
First Team: Martina Burk (M) pitcher, Haley Callihan (KC) infield, Samantha Bly (KC) infield and Jessica Spafford (KC) outfield.
Second Team: Samantha Pyle (KC) catcher.
Third Team: Brandy Neff (M) infield, Megan Campbell (M) outfield, Brandi Dunkle (KC) pitcher and Ashton Pakutz (KC) pitcher.
Six Butler County high school athletes will be among the top 100 Western Pennsylvania scholar athletes to be honored May 31 at the Downtown YMCA's 33rd annual Scholar Athlete Banquet at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel.The six being honored are cross country runner Jessica Vernon of Butler, tennis player Erin Flynn of Mars, soccer player Angela Higgins of Mars, swimmer Elyse Dobrick of Seneca Valley and golfers Lauren Glew and Marisa Glew of Mars.
Three Slippery Rock University baseball players — catcher Matt Adams, third baseman Billy Herman and outfielder M.J. Parsons — were named to the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional all-tournament team.Adams batted .474 with nine hits in 19 at-bats and nine RBI in the tournament and finished the year with a school-record 24 doubles. Herman hit .375 (6-for-16) with four runs scored and Parsons hit .438 (7-for-16) with a homer and three RBI.Kutztown won the tournament title game over West Chester. The Rock finished third.
Tyler Kotch scored two goals and Cody Conklin, Zach Reiser and Jared Oesterling each added one goal, but the Butler boys lacrosse team lost a 9-5 decision to Kiski School, in a WPSLA Division II quarterfinal game Tuesday.The Golden Tornado end the season with an overall record of 9-10.
