Kinser takes pole, WoO race

BUFFALO TWP — For Steve Kinser, it was a game of give and take.

Give him the pole, he'll take the victory.

Such was the case Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway as the fabled 53-year-old driver of the No. 11 Sprint car began the 35-lap Commonwealth Clash on the pole and was never challenged from start to finish.

It was Kinser's first WoO start on the pole this season. He drew the first starting position for the 6-lap fast dash and won that going away to gain the pole spot for the feature.

"All I know is, our car was good tonight ... real good," Kinser said.

Joey Saldana finished a distant second. Jason Meyers — who posted the fastest qualifying time of 12.959 seconds — finished third.

Kinser's victory was his 16th at Lernerville, breaking a tie with Sammy Swindell for most WoO feature wins here. It was his third WoO feature triumph this season and the 536th of his career.

"They said this was my first pole this year, but I don't keep track of that stuff," Kinser said. "I'm not crazy about the way they determine the racing order anymore ... I don't even understand it.

"All I do is show up and race."

Tuesday's win marked his third consecutive Outlaws victory at Lernerville in May.

Mere coincidence, Kinser insisted.

"This is the time of year when you feel like it's time to get out there and race your car," he said.

Brian Ellenberger of Butler, who has raced the All-Star Sprint Series in recent years, finished 22rd in the feature to lead all local drivers. He finished fifth in his heat race to qualify for the A-Main.

"I'm sure the track's gonna dry up before the night's over," Ellenberger said before the feature. "I'm just glad to be in there. It's an awfully tough field. Even Donny Schatz didn't make it."

Schatz is the defending Outlaws points champion and points leader so far this year. He had to take a provisional to start in the feature as he failed to qualify through the heat races or the B-Main.

Schatz did finish ninth — securing his 18th top-10 finish in 20 Outlaw features this year.

Bob Felmlee of Franklin finished in front of Schatz for the fifth and final transfer spot in their heat race. Felmlee posted the second fastest qualifying time of 12.990 seconds earlier in the evening.

Felmlee's engine was damaged Sunday at Tri-City Speedway and he had a new one put in immediately.

"No way was I gonna miss this," he said of the Outlaws show, "I'm like Ed (Lynch Jr.) now, I get excited for these special shows.

"The car's working fine. But, yeah, I'm very surprised to have the second-fastest time."

Felmlee tailed the fast dash, however, and finished 23rd in the feature.

Lynch never got going Tuesday, getting nipped at the finish line for the fourth and final transfer spot from the B-Main.

He took a track provisional to start the feature, but caused two cautions and pitted for the night on the 18th lap.

"There was only one groove out there tonight, so it was tough," Lynch said. "But I tried changing too many things with the car getting ready for this race. I should have just left it alone."

Notes: Randy Hall of Olean, N.Y., won the E-Modified feature, passing Dave Groves on the third turn of the final lap. It was Hall's second career E-Mod win at Lernerville. ... There were 66 cars in the pits, including 46 Sprints. ... The only red light of the night occurred on the 26th lap of the WoO feature, when Jeremy Campbell flipped his car off Turn 2. He was not injured. ... Saldana still holds the fast-lap record of 12.334 seconds here, having set that standard in 2002. ... Fab Four racing returns to Lernerville Friday night.
