Talk with the elderly

My mother-in-law fell recently and seriously injured her ankle. Because of infections and her age, of course, it has been a long, hard road for her. She has been in and out of the hospital and rehabilitation facilities since Jan. 15.

But throughout all of this, her spirits have been fantastic. I have been to visit her throughout her ordeal and got to really listen to stories about her childhood.

She worked in the steel mills when World War II was going on and was known as Rosie the Riveter. She also told me stories of Pittsburgh as it was many years ago.

I listened with anticipation and amazement at the vivid details she gave, which I thought was remarkable since she is 84 and can remember things as if they happened yesterday.

I’m 47 and cannot remember what happened last week.

Her sense of humor and wit are totally refreshing. I like to kid around with her, and I am amazed, when I say something sarcastic to her, she fires right back without hesitation.

I am proud of her and her accomplishments throughout her life, and also the way she has dealt with her current situation. I just hope when I am her age I can look back on my life and feel that I have accomplished just half of what this gracious lady has done in her life.

Take time to talk with our elderly; you might be surprised what you learn.
