PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ top two draft picks, linebackers Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley, were hurt during the first day of a three-day minicamp Friday and may not practice the rest of the weekend.

Timmons’ groin was wrapped following the morning practice and Woodley injured a hamstring. Neither injury is believed to be serious, and both players will be re-examined before the first of two practices Saturday.

Timmons, from Florida State, was the No. 15 pick in last month’s NFL draft. Woodley, from Michigan, was the No. 46 overall pick.

DALLAS — Dirk Nowitzki has been chosen as the NBA’s MVP for leading the Dallas Mavericks to one of the best regular seasons in league history, a team official told The Associated Press Friday.The formal announcement will come Tuesday at a news conference, said the team official, who requested anonymity because the announcement is pending.Nowitzki and the Mavericks went from a league-best 67 wins to a stunning first-round elimination by eighth-seeded Golden State, with the big German quite un-MVP-like for most of the series.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State lineman Elijah Robinson’s football career is over after he suffered a neck injury in spring practice.Robinson was able to walk off the field and was not hospitalized after the injury, but team doctor Wayne Sebastianelli discovered after examinations that Robinson had been born with a tight spinal canal, team officials said.Any impact to Robinson’s head could pinch the spinal column and result in paralysis, the team said Thursday.
