Steelers want casino plan vote delayed

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers want the city planning commission to delay a vote on a master plan for a casino to be built near Heinz Field, saying the casino company has not properly studied the impact of traffic on the area.

Steelers President Art Rooney II said the team is concerned because traffic on the North Shore, and the several state and interstate highways that lead to the stadium area, is already jammed badly by fans that attend the team's games.

"Our main issue is that people underestimate how difficult it is to get 65,000 people in and out of that site," Rooney told a Pittsburgh newspaper.

The commission is scheduled to vote on the plan May 1, but some city officials said they already expect the vote will be delayed by the traffic concerns and other questions.

But Bob Oltmanns, a spokesman for PITG Gaming Co. LLC, said the traffic study for the company's planned Majestic Star casino did address game-day traffic.

The casino does not anticipate traffic problems because Sunday and Monday night football games are not peak times for the casino, Oltmanns said. Football traffic could even deter casino traffic, Oltmanns said, and, even at its peak, the casino won't generate the kind of intense traffic the Steelers generate, Oltmanns said.
